 Romanesque and Islamic  September 21, 2023 Romanesque  The Romanesque period is defined by Italy and France around the time of 800 AD. This specific art and architecture style was influenced by much of Roman literatures and the new technology being created at this time. Some events that took place during this time such as the mass amounts of churches being built and the religious awakening durning this time were crucial to the development of this style.  One design element that was developed and used frequently throughout many churches during the Romanesque period was different types of vaults. There were four specific vaults that were used such as; barrel vault, groin vault, rib vault and fan vault.  Prehistoric Architecture and Interiors  During the prehistoric time interior design and Architecture was based on survival and the materials they had around them. During this time many homes and dwellings were made out of simple and organic materials such as, rocks, mud, and stone.  In the picture above is a mud and thatch house that was commonly used in the prehistoric ages. This house was made by gathering hatch or straw and hay and binding them together to create a roof that would sit on dried mud walls.  Another type of architecture found from the prehistoric ages was the Lascaux Caves located in southwestern France. These caves were a combination of caves that formed a village from 17,000 BCE. Post-Modernism/ Deconstruction 22 April 2023 During the time of the postmodernism movement, the west showed their support for Israel, therefore, the Middle east and Arab countries cut off the oil supply to the US and Western countries. Due to this decision, there was a global recession which affected people in many ways. Many consumers started to change their outlook on the economy and became "grab what you can get" mentality, which left modernism to stop progressing.  The colorful image above is a style that derived from post-modernism called "the Memphis Movement." This movement started from a design exhibition in Milan in 1981. The reason for the movement was to deconstruct the style of modernism and take away the strict boundaries and rules that were set in place.  Modernism in America: Part 2 15 April 2023 The Style of Modernism has many different aspects to it including one of the most popular parts of the style called Mid-Century Modern. The style of Mid-Century modern has many famous trademarks and characteristics such as the asymmetrical profiles and the combination of outside and inside and how they are interwoven within the architecture. The picture above was a project done by Joseph Eichler. The characteristics are seen in this image relate to the Mid Century style because of the sloped roofs, the expanding walls of glass, and the combination of indoor and outdoor spaces.  The image above is an interior done by Joseph Eichler and an important characteristic seen in this image is the use of color. Modernism in America: Part 1 8 April 2023 Background: The Design style of modernism became well-known around the time of the early to mid 1900s after World War II. The countries with major ties to this style were mainly European countries such as France and Germany, these countries were also greatly effected by the World Wars which caused them to undergo major changes. After World War II Modernism became popular and the design style spread through books and journals which help get the style over to America.  Rise of the Decorator/ History of Woman in Interior Design  1 February, 2023 During the rise of this era, two categories fell into play, the Decorators and the functionalists. The functionalists believed in form and function and strayed away from excessive decoration and furnishing while Decorators or otherwise known as "embellishers" used furnishings as a way to complete a space and design a cohesive room.  Decorators became known to be around 1900 when people need help to start furnishing their homes and buildings. Before this time it would be the architect's job to hire someone to complete the interior space with decoration, furnishings, paint, and a floor plan, thus creating the interior designer.
