 English Late Renaissance 

One well known name during this time was Robert Adam. Adam was an architect and interior designer whose style was influenced by classical antiquity. The excavations of Pompeii were another influence during this time which helped designers get back to the characteristics of Greek and Rome designs. Adam characteristics include, the integration of all elements such as; wood, brick, plaster, fabrics, stucco, and more. 

This interior is an interior done by Robert Adam. The use colorful plasters shows which time period of the Adam design this room is. The early stages of Adam characteristic (1756-1770) were more bold and masculine while the later stage of Adam characteristics (1770-1792) was more delicate and feminine like seen in the picture to the left. This style was also more influenced by french designers. Many ceilings were decorated with roman stucco decorations and octagon shapes.

Adam characteristics is known to be an extremely formal style that focuses on unity of the room and the symmetry. After years of plain interiors and neutral colors, colorful interiors finally got reintroduced in Adam characteristic interiors. The use of bright colors that still created a sense of unity was common during this time. The color often used during this time for walls was a pale green like seen in this picture. 



The furniture during this time was incredibly detailed and symmetrical. Satin wood and paint was often used in with furniture with details as well. The chair pictured to the right is known as the satin wood shield back chair. The vibrant colors used in this chair is a great depiction of the type of interiors that were common in many palaces and buildings during this time. 

Another piece of popular furniture during this time was mirrors. The shape of the backing of the chair reflects the shape of the mirriors designed during this time. The oval shape with the molding around it helps creates a formal and elegant design.



Another famous designer during this time was George Hepplewhite. The type of furniture Hepplewhite was similar to Adams, however Hepplewhite focused more on tables and chairs. Some characteristics of his tables and chair legs were thin and tapered at the end with light designs and carvings. Hepplewhite was an avid user of satinwood for his furniture, however he used many different kinds of wood together. While Hepplewhite's furniture was popular and elegant looking, the construction of his furniture was weak due to the way he built the skinny legs and thick base at the top. 




Modern Application:


The rise of ceiling design was an important part of late English Renaissance design. Modern ceiling designs now include straight, simple, and geometric designs. This is different from English Renaissance design because the ceiling design was incredibly detailed rather than big bold designs that are used in modern ceilings. 

The chair to the left is a popular modern chair that is used throughout interiors everywhere, however there are many late English Renaissance characteristics that are seen. The upholstery in the chair at the base is a characteristic that is seen in many late English Renaissance chairs. Another characteristic is the skinny tapered legs that is used in this chair.


Furniture during this time often had skinny legs and a thick base. Many modern furniture still carries those characteristics today. The side table the to the right is a mid century modern table that has skinny legs, however over the years the construction of this type of style was perfected making a durable and sustainable design of this type of furniture.

 Rise of the Decorator/ History of Woman in Interior Design  1 February, 2023 During the rise of this era, two categories fell into play, the Decorators and the functionalists. The functionalists believed in form and function and strayed away from excessive decoration and furnishing while Decorators or otherwise known as "embellishers" used furnishings as a way to complete a space and design a cohesive room.  Decorators became known to be around 1900 when people need help to start furnishing their homes and buildings. Arts and Crafts Era  January 20, 2023 During the time of the  Arts and Crafts interior design era, one of the main influences of this movement was the Victorian Era, medieval design, and gothic style. The Victorian Era was known to be the start of a consumer era when it came to interior design. The Era was characterized by bold features and colors. Some of the negatives of the Victorian Era was the quality of the furniture and the rooms came off as cluttered and poorly thought out.
