Due to the rise in new and faster ways of transportation and new travel design styles were able to be quickly learned and adapted by different countries. Art Nouveau was known to be first seen in Europe however the style was quickly adapted by the United States. 


Art Nouveau looked different in America than how it did in Europe, however, the two places still had similar characteristics. 

When learning about Art Nouveau more in depth two designers come to mind. Louis Comfort Tiffany and Louis H. Sullivan. These two designers pioneered Art Nouveau in America and took what was happening in Europe and reinvented Art Nouveau in a new way. 

The Designer Louis Comfort Tiffany is known to be a jewelry designer that became well known in America. Tiffany & Co. is known to be a product of Tiffanys work, therefore making him a well known name among designers. 

Some background on Louis Comfort Tiffany is that he studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and became a well known designer in America around mid to late 1800s. 

Tiffany was also a talented artist and designer in the fields of painting, pottery and glass. Along with jewelry Tiffany created many stained glass pieces that are Art Nouveau influenced. Later in Tiffanys profession he started to focus on stained class and did many churches and stained glass lamps like the picture below.

Towards the end of Tiffanys journey his work was sold at the original Art Nouveau shop in Paris that started the movement in the first place, which is a great achievement for designers who produce Art Nouveau inspired pieces.


Many of Tiffanys work were inspired by nature such as, flower, trees, plants, birds. The image of this lamp below you can see many shared characteristics between the design of the lamp and Art Nouveau. 

One Further step:

Louis H Sullivan is another well known Art Nouveau designer who brought the style to America, more specifically Chicago. Sullivan studied at MIT and Ecole des Beau-Arts in Paris. Sullivan was invested in restoring and renovating Chicago. 

Sullivan payed great attention to skyscrapers in the city and because of this he is know to be the "father of skyscrapers." The reason why Sullivan was known to be an impactful designer in the Art Nouveau movement is because he had an extremely detailed designs on his buildings.

 

This building is one of Sullivans designs and some of the characteristics seen in this building is the organic shapes and the detailed work on the corner of the building that mirrors nature and the Art Nouveau design. Sullivan main materials used in this building were steel and terra cotta which is seen in this building above. 




In the image above is one of Sullivans building, however the building has changed over the years and is now a target. The building still has some original characteristics such as the steel windows and the organic shape of the corner. 



This is a modern take on the designs of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The glass design can be seen in this lamp while also taking a modern approach to the design by using a more geometric design on the bas e of the lamp. The contrast of the shade of the lamp with the organic lines and the geometric design of the base is a great example of the Art Nouveau and modern design.


In the image above is a modern take on Art Nouveau furniture. This style of chair is seen in many places in modern day decor and furniture because the style of Art Nouveau is still alive and well, however still evolving and changing. The chair share many similar characteristics of the style of art Nouveau because of the organic shapes.

    Eva,
    I like how you included the founding fathers of America Art Nouveau, Louis Sullivan and Louis Tiffany, in your blog. The lamps that you chose to include, Louis Tiffanys design and the modern day one, really replicates Tiffanys work on stain glass and how innovated it was especially when it came to use the advancement to technology. The blog was really easy to read while also learning about the background of the two founding fathers. Good job.

    I really enjoyed reading your Blog entry this week. You informed us about the two founding fathers of Art Nouveau in the United States. I appreciated how you described the many areas of design that Louis Tiffany explored, such as glass, jewelry, painting and pottery. I loved how you showed us an example of a modern interpretation of a stained glass lamp.
    Your discussion of Louis Sullivan was also informative. You gave great supporting images to demonstrate his attention to detail.

    Eva,
    In your blog I liked that you dived deeper into how the glass lamps were created by both designers. I think the way they created the lamps were very decorative and expressed what they saw in design. Fast forward to Louis Creating furniture and how that has advanced to what it was when he first started I really thought was intriguing. I think the way you provided a variety of pictures was a good idea to get a better understanding and interpret what you were talking about. I think you including the founding fathers were a good touch for us to get better concept of the Art nouveau also! Really good job overall in your blog!

Arts and Crafts Era  January 20, 2023 During the time of the  Arts and Crafts interior design era, one of the main influences of this movement was the Victorian Era, medieval design, and gothic style.
