The Style of Art Deco is known to be one of the most popular interior design styles today. The reason for the popularity is the combination and also the tension of two key components of interior design, functionalism, and decorators' value. Art Deco has functional elements because of its history of origin. Art Deco was introduced around the end of World War 1 and the start of World War 2 in France around that time furniture and designs that were functional were extremely popular due to the state of the world. However, Decoration and fashion were also implemented in the style due to the French influence on the style. 


The image above is an Art Deco-designed living room in the 1920s. As you can see the design has characteristics of fashion and decoration. The room is shown to look luxurious and expensive. Large posters and tall furniture was used to convey a sense of fashion. The light fixture above is another key component of the Art Deco design, showcasing modern materials and grand designs. 


This image above points out some other important characteristics of the Art Deco design. The patterns seen throughout the room are patterns and designs associated with Art Deco. Patterns such as; zig-zags, chevrons, and strong lines are all key components of an Art Deco design.


The piece of furniture is a great example of Art Deco design because of the elongated structure of the furniture mimicking the structure of a skyscraper. Another Art Deco characteristic is the shiny and mirror-like finish and material of the wood used in the piece of furniture. This is used to create an emphasis on the light fixtures placed on the furniture to reflect the light. 



The image above is an example of Art Deco in a modern-day context. The style of Art Deco and contemporary design is used and combined to create a modern take on Art Deco design. The design of the wallpaper is similar to the original Art Deco designs of the 1920s. The gold accents and shiny mirror materials reflect the characteristics of the original Art Deco designs.


Art Deco interior design in modern-day design is often times mixed with various styles. In the image above you can see the combination of eclectic style with Art Deco design and how the style of Art Deco has become versatile and fluid throughout the years, always changing but keeping the core characteristics such as the gold tints in the wallpaper and the designs seen throughout the wallpaper as well


The image above is another example of modern Art Deco design. As trend change such as colors used throughout interior spaces, styles tend to change with the. This take on Art Deco is seen as a brighter more modern appeal, whereas in the 1920s Art Deco was very bold dark, and fashionable. This interior space still has the same gold, bold, and fashionable design as the original style of Art Deco, however, the space is bright, has softer features, and more welcoming to modern design. 


One Step Further:

Another part of Art Deco design is Industrial Design which also came to be around the same time, sharing similarities. Industrial Design was all about production and appealing to the customer to create more sales. 


 The Designer pictured to the left is Raymond Loewy (1893-1986). Loewy is known to be one of the most famous Industrial Designers of his time. Loewy was a French imigrant who was self educated and produces some of the most monumental industrial works of our time such as the S-1 Locamotive

Loewy also designed The industrial style chair, which many people still use and grab inspiration from today.

Loewy was a monumental designer in the Industrial Design age because he was goal-oriented and looked at design as a consumer, not a designer, which, therefore, made him a successful designer.

    Eva,
    You did a well job at explaining the history of what is occurring in the world during this time and explaining how it related to the design attributes. I liked the detail text of each image while also explaining something different from the art deco movement. The characteristics of gold and elegancy was a big part of this era and yours images you chose gave a good visual on that. I found your one step further on Lowey interesting because of him being a self educated design.

    Eva,
    I think your post was very informative which I really enjoyed. The way you introduced Art Deco set the reader up to fully understand where and how it started. You go into further detail of the Art deco movement advancing and the features that became more modernistic and elegant. The pictures you have chosen spoke for itself by giving us a better visual of what you're explaining to us. As for the one step further I think explaining who he is and what he has designed helped us give a better understanding of who he is and what he created!

    Your Blog entry was great! I appreciate how you started of reminding us how popular Art Deco is today. Going on to explain the historical evolution of the style was very informative. I liked how you gave excellent visuals and descriptions of original and modern Art Deco. One Step Further was interesting- Loewy was really was a "Renaissance Man". He designed such a variety of things during this era.

Arts and Crafts Era  January 20, 2023 During the time of the  Arts and Crafts interior design era, one of the main influences of this movement was the Victorian Era, medieval design, and gothic style. The Victorian Era was known to be the start of a consumer era when it came to interior design. The Era was characterized by bold features and colors.
