 Emergence of Modernism

Modernism is one of the most well known and talked about design styles that has risen in the past 100 years. The design style became popular around 1900-1950 with architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and many more who became house hold names for the Modernism movement. 



The house pictured above was designed by Le Corbusier who is another famous modernist architect. The modernist characteristic seen throughout the design of this house is the industrial feel that the house gives off due to the geometric shapes and clean lines seen throughout the house. One of the main ideas of the modernist movement is the "rejection of the past and historical design." The word functionalism is coined by the style of modernism as well because the design aids more to the functionality of living rather than the aesthetic of the design. 


The image seen above is a house designed by Mies Van der Rohe. Mies was a well-known Modernist architect that went by the philosophy of "less is more" and you can see this philosophy come to life through his work such as the Farnsworth house pictured above. The house is simple with clean lines and a simple shape that create a sense of functionality throughout the house.


The image above is a well-known house that is done by the father of Modernism, Frank Lloyd Wright. The straight clean lines displayed throughout the house are characteristics of Modernism. The style is rejecting the old organic shapes such as the Art Nouveau style and evolves into a simple functional style.
 


The image above is an example of the style of modernism that was designed recently. The structure looks similar to what was designed when modernism first came to be because the same characteristics are still used in architecture today to create a functional and clean space to live.



The picture above is an example of modernist furniture that is still in use in many modernist houses built today. 


The chair pictured above is called the "Barcelona Chair," designed by Mies van der Rohe. This chair is a staple for modernist furniture and is still used in many houses today. Mies created a timeless piece of art that turns any space into a modernist-designed room.



The image above is another example of Modernist design. You can observe the different levels of the structure that are divided by clean vertical and horizontal lines. It is also important to note the different materials that can be used in Modernism. As time progresses so has the style of modernism, which can be seen in the new materials that have been used such as different types of wood like in the image above.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe:


Ludwig Mies van der Rohn is known to be one of the most famous architects that have come out of the Modernist era and are known for his philosophy, "less is more" and "God is in the details." A German Architect who was the son of a tradesman and apprenticed under Peter Behrens, Mies sought out to create simplistic designs.

    Eva,
    I really enjoyed that you included a lot of photos showing different types of modernism and who contributed to this movement. I think what I enjoyed most about your post was that you focused on how modernism developed as far as clean lines ,simplistic and what each designers contribution was to this movement. I think Mies really hit the jackpot on modernism that "less is more" which I feel as if that is the goal in modernism. Good job on the detail in your post especially the pictures!

    Eva, I liked your images with the description on how it relates to modernism. Looking at the different architectures during this period and the impact they have on how modernism is viewed as well as the influence they have on deisgner now allows us to have a better understand of how some architecture work as came about. With that said, I liked your one step further on Miles and hope you learned more about him like I did especially after doing the Farnsworth House project.

    Your blog entry this week is a great overview of the significant designers of this period. I enjoyed your images and the elements that are unique to modernism. Mies van der Rohe was a perfect designer to look at in more detail. In this post you needed to address the historical factors that lead to this style of design. Your presentation needs more detail- you are helping to educate all of us on this design movement.

Arts and Crafts Era  January 20, 2023 During the time of the  Arts and Crafts interior design era, one of the main influences of this movement was the Victorian Era, medieval design, and gothic style.
